Papers, 1864-2003 (bulk 1864-1865).

The collection contains Civil War papers of Alfred Allen including 29 letters from the last two years of the Civil War. Most of the letters are from Allen to his future wife Mollie Hand. The letters mention his homesickness, soldier morale, and the pursuit of Rebel forces. The collection also includes a photograph of Allen in his uniform and a photograph of his first wife Mollie.

Alfred Allen enlisted in the Civil War just prior to his twenty-second birthday. He fought as a Union soldier in the Ninth Regiment Indiana Infantry, Company D. After the war, Allen married Mary Alice Hand. She died at age twenty-four after bearing two children. Alfred Allen then married Melinda Baldwin in 1874 and moved to California.
